چکیده

A global compilation of the neodymium isotopic composition of seawater is presented. With 880 data points, it confirms the gradual Nd increase for intermediate/deep water masses from the northwest North Atlantic, via the Austral and Indian oceans, to the Pacific. This confirms the usefulness of this tracer for studying large scale oceanic circulation. The compilation stresses the need for documenting the oceans south of 30°S, from which less than 4% of the data are derived. The associated neodymium concentrations display heterogeneous vertical gradients amongst major oceanic basins. In addition to particle remineralization along the global thermohaline circulation, the database suggests that basin size differences also contribute to that heterogeneity.

Neodymium isotopic variations in North Pacific modern silicate sediment and the insignificance of detrital REE contributions to seawater

The neodymium isotopic composition of the silicate fraction of Holocene pelagic sediments from the North Pacific define two provinces: a central North Pacific province characterized by unradiogenic and remarkably homogeneous end (--10.2 +_ 0.5) and a narrow circum-Pacific marginal province characterized by more radiogenic and variable end (--4.2 + 3.8). The silicate fraction in the central Nort...

Neodymium in the oceans: a global database, a regional comparison and implications for palaeoceanographic research

The neodymium (Nd) isotopic composition of seawater has been used extensively to reconstruct ocean circulation on a variety of time scales. However, dissolved neodymium concentrations and isotopes do not always behave conservatively, and quantitative deconvolution of this non-conservative component can be used to detect trace metal inputs and isotopic exchange at ocean-sediment interfaces. In o...

Uranium isotopic compositions of the crust and ocean: Age corrections, U budget and global extent of modern anoxia

The U/U isotopic composition of uranium in seawater can provide important insights into the modern U budget of the oceans. Using the double spike technique and a new data reduction method, we analyzed an array of seawater samples and 41 geostandards covering a broad range of geological settings relevant to low and high temperature geochemistry. Analyses of 18 seawater samples from geographicall...

Variable Hf-Sr-Nd radiogenic isotopic compositions in a Saharan dust storm over the Atlantic: Implications for dust flux to oceans, ice sheets and the terrestrial biosphere

Isotopic characterization of aerosol mineral particles (atmospheric dust) of varying sizes is essential in classifying source areas, and for determining the source of dust deposited over oceans and icesheets. However, the effect of atmospheric transport on radiogenic isotopic compositions is not well constrained, making provenance interpretation difficult. In order to investigate the isotopic v...

Assessment of seawater Nd isotope signatures extracted from foraminiferal shells and authigenic phases of Gulf of Guinea sediments

The radiogenic neodymium (Nd) isotope composition of foraminiferal shells provides a powerful archive to investigate past changes in sources and mixing of water masses. However, seawater Nd isotope ratios extracted from foraminiferal shells can be biased by contaminant phases such as organic matter, silicates, or ferromanganese coatings, the removal of which requires rigorous multiple step clea...
